IAHSA chapter, Aged and Community Services Australia (ACSA) launched an advertising campaign to increase support of aged care workers. The following is from their press release:
If we are all lucky enough to get old we will probably need the help of these very people in the years to come – and that includes our politicians – even our Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
Our new website www.kevin87.com.au asks Mr Rudd: “What is life going to be like for you Prime Minister when you are 87?” Visit Kevin87 to see that ageing doesn’t stop just because we are in the public eye. We hope he will join all of us in the celebration of aged care and aged care workers – and make everyone more aware of the people and services we can’t do without.
What are you doing to help the workforce in your community?

I think this campaign is brilliant. Lets TRY to interest more people to work in the aged care sector. Have you ever wondered or looked into what is involved in caring for a high care client or someone with mid to late stage Dementia. It’s not nice work and its extremely hard and hectic. The aged care facilities do not get enough funding to hire the right amount of staff, or they cant get staff, so the ratio of staff to resident is not good. Also think, what are the carers, most workers in the aged care industry are AIN’s. The wage is pitiful compared to the work we do. Maybe if there was a campaign to regulate the wages and give the AIN’s a fair go then more people would enter the industry. At the moment I can make more money working as a check out chick for woollies than I can in the aged care facilities.
I choose to work in the aged care industry because I genially care for the older generation. I like to think that I can show my appreciation to them for the sacrifices they made for us to keep this country free and what it is today.
So Mr Rudd, a wage rise for the AIN’s is badly needed.
