A recent editorial in the Japan Times decried the terrible situation in Japan in nursing care caused by the severe lack of workers. Repeated in countries worldwide, the situation in Japan is a downward spiral of quality and according to the Times, ‘if the trend continues, the nation’s nursing care system could collapse.’

Low wages and adverse working conditions are the main cause of the lack of workforce for nursing care. Japan’s immigration policy has historically been very strict for health workers. However the editorial indicated that the government has agreed to allow nurses and care workers from Indonesia to enter to provide care. Will this help? Not according to the Times, who says that the government needs to take a much more proactive role in addressing this critical issue.
