August in Washington, DC, is hazy, hot and humid. And everyone is on vacation. This gives me a chance to surf the internet and look for interesting things to share with you.

Once such item is a slide show on Fast Company.com entitled ’10 Ideas That Could Change the World’, a brief yet compelling report on the winners of the Saatchi & Saatchi’s World Changing Ideas Awards.

Held biennially, this global competition was established by international advertising giant Saatchi & Saatchi to spotlight, celebrate and promote ideas that have the potential to change the world of the individual, of groups of people with particular needs, or the whole world.

All of the 2008 winners are exciting. But I was particularly impressed by the ultimate winner, the LifeStraw, a highly portable, personal, water-purification tool that turns even the dirtiest water into safe drinking water by filtering out bacteria, viruses and parasites. Provides safe drinking water for one person for a whole year.
