The Advancing Excellence in America’s Nursing Homes campaign-a nationwide, voluntary quality improvement initiative- celebrated its second birthday last week.

According to McKnights, more than 7,100 nursing homes in the U.S. have signed on with the initiative, comprising roughly 45% of the nation’s total number of nursing homes. Also, 28 national organizations and 49 smaller local organizations have a hand in the unprecedented initiative, which originally was supposed to last just two years. Success, however, has granted it extra life, officials say.

The campaign’s goal is to strengthen the public trust in nursing home care by focusing on quality improvement and self-regulation. The campaign acknowledges the critical role of nursing home staff and consumers in improving quality of care and quality of life for nursing home residents.

AAHSA, IAHSA’s US Chapter, is a Founding Member of the campaign. IAHSA CEO Larry Minnix will speak about the campaign and its ramifications at the Annual Dinner of the National Care Forum, IAHSA’s UK Chapter, in London, England, in December 2008.
