The Economic Council of Finland issued a report this week calling for raising the retirement age and raising the age limit for voluntary supplementary pensions.

As reported in the Helsingin Sanomat, the government proposed these measures to cope with the prospect of an ageing population and urges more long term structural changes.   One such change is removal of the ‘unemployment tube’ which is a process by which jobless Fins who are nearing retirement are entitled to extended unemployment benefits before getting their pension.   They also plan to raise the retirement age and make retirement less attractive.
