Population growth plus food, water and energy shortages by 2030 will create the ‘perfect storm’ with dire consequences, according to Prof. John Beddington, Chief Scientific Adviser to the UK Government and Professor of Applied Population Biology at Imperial College.

Speaking at the Sustainable Development UK 09 conference, Prof. Beddington said that demand for food and energy will jump 50% by 2030 and for fresh water demand will jump by 30%.  The ageing of the population and climate change will exacerbate matters in unpredictable ways.

As noted on BBC News, Prof. Beddington said that the looming crisis would match the current one in the banking sector.
