AGE, The European Older People’s Platform, is a very strong advocate for older people, representing them on a wide variety of issues at the European Union.   Sensitive to the increasing use of technologies in the daily lives of older Europeans, AGE recently released a publication Older People and Information and Communication Technologies: An Ethical Approach that provides a thoughtful overview of the types of technologies being promulgated with an awareness of the ethical issues to be considered.

Ethical issues raised in the report include:

  • Autonomy and consent of the end user
  • Benefits to the end user
  • Achieving a balance between avoiding harm and respecting decisions, dignity, integrity and preferences
  • Justice – treating the individual fairly and respecting rights
