This week Ireland’s Health Minister Mary Harney revealed the new Fair Deal scheme – a government program that enables the elderly to get some financial subsidy to help pay for nursing home care.

As reported in the Irish Times, applicants will have to go through a care and needs assessment before they qualify for assistance.   The scheme calls for a combination of payments from the individual and government based on the individual’s assets.    Ultimately it should allieviate the fears of some Irish elderly who think that they will be put out of the nursing home if they run out of money.
