In January 2010 The Agewell Research & Advocacy Centre conducted a survey in India to study, identify and understand the problem of isolation in old age.    Loneliness and isolation is an increasing problem as the population ages and many families are separated because of work or other issues.

In their study, the Agewell Center found that older persons living in urban areas were more isolated than those in rural areas.   Depression and anxiety were the results of being isolated and the study authors believe that older persons could be motivated and encouraged to learn how to live happily in isolation.
