The Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research has developed a database of the oldest people in the world – those who have lived beyond their 110th birthday and given the name Supercentenarians.

To date they have found over 600 supers in 14 countries.   The data will be used to create the International Database on Longevity, giving researchers a chance to investigate mortality at advanced age and the reasons for an extra long life.    Some facts have already emerged.  The super old seem to have avoided dementia;  and being a woman gives you an advantage – 90% of those celebrating their 115th birthday were women.
