Australians are adopting new voluntary standards for universal housing design that will enable people to remain in their homes longer as they age or as they become disabled.

Basic features include a step less entry, wide doors and corridors, a ground-floor toilet and a bathroom with a shower stall and reinforced walls.

As reported in Australian Ageing Agenda, the Australian government, national building associations and IAHSA’s Chapter ACSA have joined together to promote the new livable housing guidelines with the goal of having all new homes be ‘livable’ by 2020.
