China’s rapidly ageing population is presenting unheard of challenges to the government.  In an attempt to encourage more of their residents to volunteer their time to help their own family and those of others, the city of Beijing is presenting those who do volunteer awards for filial piety.

But as noted in the Global Times, getting families to go back to traditional family values won’t be enough to deal with the growing number of elderly who are increasingly frail and in need of care.   The improvement in the volunteer system through training and cooperation with the medical community certainly helps but more planning and funding by the Chinese government is vital.
