Dr. Lars Tornstam, a Swedish sociologist, has coined the term ‘gerotranscendence’, which he describes as a shift from a materialistic and rational view of the world to a more cosmic and transcendent one, normally accompanied by an increase in life satisfaction.

His point is that as we age our values and interests change and mature, causing some changes in behavior which can sometimes be mistaken for an indication of decline, physically or mentally.

Paula Span in the The New Old Age blog provides an interesting look at gerotranscendence, in her posting  Aging’s Misunderstood Virtues.
