A new report released by the Brookings Institute in Washington, DC looks at how to achieve better heath care at lower costs for aged Americans.  According to the authors, the report  “addresses many of the challenges facing individuals with chronic conditions and functional impairments and identifies new opportunities for the integration of medical services and social supports tailored to older Americans and supported by new payment designs”.  The report is particularly notable as it takes into account the recently passed health care legislation and explores how the payment structure set up under the new legislation can affect ageing services.  The report concludes by giving the following recommendations  on how to achieve better care: enhance care delivery with IT infrastructure, integrate medical services and social support, carefully evaluate all care strategies and incentivize quality care rather than volume and intensity of services.
