IAHSA’s members around the world are increasingly serving elders who live in the community, providing a variety of supportive services such as home health and nutritional assistance.

These types of services are also important for people with disabilities, as shown in a recent report by the Association for Supported Living [ASL] in the UK.   Entitled There is An Alternative, the report demonstrates that community-based support for people with learning disabilities is more effective, safer and cheaper than institutional care, and includes 10 case studies of people who moved from institutional services to supported living services.  In each case, quality of life improved dramatically, while costs fell significantly.

This type of evidence-based reporting is important to ensure that those needing assistance are able to receive care in the place of their choice.   If you know of other reports that speak to this issue, please share them with IAHSA.
